Legislation tied to the recently signed infrastructure law will mandate the use of new car technology that could stop drunk driving. NBC News’ Kerry Sanders reports on how the tech works and talks to some of those pushing for change.

Part of President Joe Biden's newly approved infrastructure bill takes steps to combat drunk driving by mandating new technology for cars. Biden's $1 trillion Investment and Jobs Act includes a mandate for automakers to install monitoring systems to stop drunk drivers in all new vehicles as early as 2026. AMF worked hard with MADD to lobby for the passage of this legislation!

As President Joe Biden signed the $1 trillion infrastructure bill into law Monday, Alisa McMorris of Shoreham rejoiced.

The Andrew McMorris Foundation is currently lobbying Congress to pass the Reduce Impaired Driving for Everyone Act of 2019 (RIDE Act - S. 2604 of 2019). The federal legislation calls for the Department of Transportation to issue a rulemaking to equip all new cars with advanced alcohol detection technology that would passively detect whether the driver is drunk. This has the potential to eliminate drunk driving in America.

Alisa McMorris joined Rep. Rice as she made the announcement at the Drunk Driving Victims Memorial in Eisenhower Park, where she was joined by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Exec. Director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) New York Richard Mallow, and Exec. Director of Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Steve Chassman.

We were in NYC for a press conference with MADD NY to promote NYS lowering the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) down to .05%. There is a bill going to the NY Senate and Assembly to change the law from .08% to .05% and the press conference will help support this common-sense bill in order to save thousands of lives.
