NHTSA Estimates 39,345 Traffic Fatalities in 2024
April 8, 2025
Encouraging news just released by NHTSA, but more work is needed. “It’s encouraging to see that traffic fatalities are continuing to fall from their COVID pandemic highs. Total road fatalities, however, remain significantly higher than a decade ago, and America’s traffic fatality rate remains high relative to many peer nations,” said NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser. “To reduce fatalities further, USDOT is working closely with the law enforcement community to enhance traffic enforcement on our roads — including speeding, impairment, distraction, and lack of seat belt use.”
While this progress is promising, we know there’s still a long way to go — especially when it comes to stopping drunk driving. The HALT Drunk Driving Law and the advanced vehicle safety technology it will require represent a turning point. Once fully implemented, this lifesaving technology has the potential to prevent more than 10,000 deaths every year. We’re on the cusp of real change — and the road ahead is one of hope.
